Man, it's been a wonderful year. Truly! So much stuff has happened. It's difficult to pick out a single moment – working with one of my favourite bands of the last decade, Officers on their 'Petals' single release campaign (the track features Gary Numan and was released in the aid of the CALM charity), or winning the National Diversity Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence (within the category of disability), perhaps even carrying the paralympic flame for York city? Crazy good times.
I am so happy with how everything's gone for me this year, and I am excited about how the future's going as well.
In 2013, I am going to be focusing primarily on work in schools and inspiring young people as part of Disabled Entrepreneurs (promoting business advice and support), Soundsphere magazine (promoting work and opportunities within digital media/music) and The Creative Condition (exploring avenues and opportunities in PR, design and film production); this has been a huge part of my professional life over the last two years, and I want to do stuff in schools, colleges and universities more regularly.
It's not that I don't love doing the "rock 'n' roll" interviews and stuff (Soundsphere TV will launch as a more regular thing in '13 as well – you can see an example of my interview with Rob Holliday of Sulpher/The Prodigy below along with a chat Soundspheremag.com conducted with Numan and Officers about the aforementioned collab...), it's just I feel that's where my career is headed these days - I am all about creating opportunities and mentoring - it seems to be what I do best. We'll see how that all develops! I'll still be doing loads of gigs and interviews, mind!
It's always difficult to maintain motivation when you're working for yourself, but as cheesy as this sounds, if you're willing to work hard, then it can pay off. All I've done this year is work hard. It's as simple as that. To be fair, all you need to do is look at the great success of the paralympians this year, and their efforts to see what I mean! Those athletes remain a constant source of inspiration.
Of course, I have had a great amount of help from my wonderful family and friends, a great office space (at The Phoenix Centre in York) and a bunch of decent projects (mostly through friends and colleagues – it IS most of the time about WHO you know in my experience, especially within the creative industries. But yeah, I would like to think hard work is why I am in this position. I've learned as I've gone along; accounts, people management, everything, since day one. It's all about putting yourself out of your comfort zone, and collaborating wherever possible. Collaboration is definitely key.
I can't thank everyone enough. Seriously. I hope that I've got as much to be proud of this time next year.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Good luck with everything that you're doing, and much love,
Dom x
