Soundsphere's Dom Smith talks to Rob Edgar of YSJ Alumni about his career in music journalism

Dom Smith is a digital journalist and qualified counsellor. In 2007, Dom graduated from York St John University with a Film and Television degree. He later completed his Master’s degree in Magazine Journalism at the University of Central Lancashire. In 2012, he was the National Diversity Award winner for Entrepreneurial Excellence. He was also voted one of the happiest people in the country according to the Independent on Sunday.

​Dom runs the music publication, Soundsphere and in previous years has written for Metro, Rock Sound magazine, NME.com, and Metal Hammer magazine to name a few. He has interviewed everyone from Judas Priest to The 1975.

In addition, Dom works as part of Wobbling About and Rocking Out (promoting disability and mental health awareness) and the Creative Condition doing PR and marketing work for various clients. Throughout his career, Dom has had the opportunity to conduct regular workshops and talks around the country about entrepreneurship, media, and journalism with students.

The Crow helped me believe I could do anything, even with Cerebral Palsy, and it still does…

In this feature, I will not be addressing the tragic death of Brandon Lee on the set (as there is already enough about that all over the internet), but I will say that I respect and value Brandon’s performance as one of the greatest superhero portrayals of all time.

Also, James O’Barr’s comics are amazing. For this article, I will be focusing on the 1994 film adaption and its impact on me as a person, but if you have time, go back, and check out the stunning book.

Soundsphere editor and WARO founder, Dom Smith recently appeared on the Strong Tea Podcast to talk about growing up with Cerebral Palsy, starting Soundsphere (and WARO) and the difficulties that came with that. In addition, Dom discusses the journey toward becoming a qualified counsellor, and dealing with his own mental health challenges.

This week on Disabled and Proud, Brooke Millhouse is joined by Dom Smith, the “happiest man in Britain,” whose philosophy is "Don't be a dick & do cool shit". He chats about his own experiences with cerebral palsy, how this influences his work, and how he went about creating a platform for other young music journalists.
